SULMONA

Sulmona is a city and commune of the province of L'Aquila. It is situated in the valley of the Gizio, in a spacious basin formed by the junction of that river with several minor streams. In ancient times, it was one of the most important cities of the Paeligni and is known for being the native town of Ovid, of whom there is a bronze statue in the square known as Piazza XX Settembre located on the town's main road also under his name.
Sulmona is the home of the Italian confectionery known as confetti. These are delicious sugar coated almonds and are traditionally given to friends and relatives on weddings and other special occasions. The local artisans also color these candies and craft them into flowers and other creations. There are two main factories in town and several shops that sell these items.



ATRI

Atri is a commune in the Province of Teramo in the Abruzzo region of Italy. It has a population of over 11,500.
Today, Atri is one of the most important historical, cultural and artistic centers in the Region of Abruzzo..
The most important monuments in modern Atri include the 13th century Duomo - the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, which was built on the remains of an earlier Romanesque church, and the Palazzo Ducale, the palace of the Acquaviva's which is built on the highest point of land in the city.



ROCCA CALASCIO

Rocca Calascio is a ruined mountaintop fortress or rocca in Abruzzo. At an elevation of 1460 meters, the Rocca of Calascio is the highest fortress in Italy. Built of stone and masonry exclusively for military purposes and intended only to accommodate troops, the fortress overlooks the Plain of Navelli at one of the highest points in the ancient Barony of Carapelle.
Near the fortress, at a slightly lower elevation, is Santa Maria della Pietà, an octagonal church built in the seventeenth century.
Rocca Calascio was the location for the final scene of Richard Donner film Ladyhawke, which starred Michelle Pfeiffer, Matthew Broderick, Rutger Hauer, and Leo McKern.
